Through a Northern Lens : Photographs of Our Community

From its early days as a little town called Graham, Sioux Lookout has long been used as a backdrop for a motley crew of professional photographers and amateurs alike. And it is thanks to them that we have such a rich and diverse collection of photographs that tell our town's story.

Our photographs range from those captured with simple box cameras to the more portable fold-out models and finally to those taken with digital technology. They show our town in times of triumph, such as the royal visit in 1939, and in times of trouble like the fire of 1917. Through the photographic lens we are privy to intimate family memories and great historic moments. In these images we can almost hear the splash of a floatplane's skis touching down on the waters of Pelican Lake and the sharp metallic cut of hockey skates on ice. These photographs tell our stories and will continues to serve as a window to the past for years to come.
