Description:
Amethyst is purple or violet quartz. It's prime uses are jewelry and as decorative building stone, making it the most valuable variety of quartz. The colour, presumably due to the iron, occurs in patches and layers. Canada is among the leading sources of amethyst.

A vein of amethyst runs diagonally through what appears to be red granite. At the base of the specimen are black patches on the red granite. The back of the specimen is almost vertical. The amethyst crystals are on top of the specimen.
